HELPING PEOPLE WITH POST-COVID SYMPTOMS

FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, SCIENTISTS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FULLY INVESTIGATE ALL THE SYMPTOMS AND MANIFESTATIONS OF COVID-19. HOWEVER, IT WAS ONLY RELATIVELY RECENTLY THAT IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE DISEASE IS DANGEROUS NOT ONLY WHILE THE INFECTION IS IN THE BODY, BUT ALSO AFTER RECOVERY.

While we rejoice in a negative coronavirus test, our bodies continue to suffer: not only from physical but also from mental disorders - "post-COVID syndrome". This is a sharp change in the patient's mental state with the onset of the disease, which continues for a certain period after recovery. Of course, post-COVID syndrome affects all areas of human activity, provoking unreasonable anxiety, and as a result, productivity decreases.
Natalia Cherniavska, a member of the Ukrainian Society of Psychotherapists, commented on the impact of the post-COVID syndrome and highlighted its main symptoms, including rapid fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath, distracted attention, panic attacks, memory problems, spatial orientation, depression, and other cognitive disorders in a conversation with Ratusha.

"People with post-COVID symptoms definitely need help"

"If the disorders are not severe, you can manage on your own. Do physical exercises for the lungs, which the doctor shows you. There are also various techniques for working with obsessive thoughts on your own. If the manifestations are excessive and prevent a person from doing everyday things, working, etc., then it is better to consult a specialist: a therapist if it is somatic, and a psychiatrist if it is a mental sphere (he or she will see if medications are needed to reduce excessive anxiety, or if communication with a psychotherapist or psychologist is enough and you can do without medication). You need to look for some kind of motivational resource for yourself: something that brings positive emotions and inspiration.
To reduce excessive anxiety and stabilize it, you can use the "here and now" technique. You need to focus on the following things: what I see; what I hear; what I feel with my skin; what smells I smell; what I feel in my body. A person turns from external fear into himself, i.e. shifts the focus of attention from the outside world to himself - he becomes the main figure," advises Natalia Cherniavska.

Today, psychotherapy practice has seen an increase in clients with post-COVID symptoms. For those who have had Covid-19, it is recommended that they slowly return to their normal rhythm of life. You should allow yourself time for physical and mental recovery.
"I don't know how much you can call it 'psychological rehabilitation,' but people with post-COVID symptoms definitely need help if they interfere with their lives," says a psychologist.
